  • Augustinian Abbey and Hotel Passage

The international Mendel Genetics Conference is a tribute to the life and work of Gregor Johann Mendel, the founder of genetics, whose 200th birth anniversary will be celebrated on the opening day of the conference. The interdisciplinary conference is organized by universities and institutions that have been cultivating Mendel’s legacy and promoting it in the scholarly community as well as the general public on a long-term basis. The conference participants will have the opportunity to meet over the common theme, genetics, in authentic settings and to visit other places associated with Mendel as part of the accompanying programme.

The conference will be a tribute to Mendel, as well as an important professional event to be attended by many excellent scientists including several Nobelists. The conference will address current topics in human genetics with a focus on rare hereditary diseases and tumour predisposition syndromes, as well as animal and plant genetics, including the issue of GMO or genetics of bacteria and viruses. Prominent international scientists will also discuss ethical issues related to the diagnosis and screening of genetic diseases or the application of new genomic technologies in medicine and agriculture.

Conference topics:
Human genetics (inherited diseases, cancer genetics, gene therapies)
Plant genetics, animal genetics, the genetics of microorganisms
Emerging technologies in genetic research
Ethical questions in genetics
Genetics and society
The history of genetics: research of the life and legacy of G. J. Mendel

The conference will be followed by Mendel Festival, to be held on 23 and 24 July 2022, which will popularize the latest findings of genetic research and host a number of cultural events.
